UH-Hilo’s men’s and women’s soccer teams opened their seasons with home exhibition games against Multnomah on Wednesday afternoon at the Vulcan Soccer Field.
Both Vulcan teams won, with the men winning 3-2 and the women dominating the Lions 7-0.
Women’s soccer
The Vulcans left Multnomah in the dust with five goals in the first half.
Less than a minute into the contest, Teani Arakawa scored a goal — her first of four. 13 minutes later, she scored another goal.
Around the 25-minute mark, Filippa Graneld scored UH-Hilo’s third goal, assisted by Jazzy Ellis.
Less than six minutes later, Magan Donovan assisted Zariah Nogales for another goal. Donovan notched another assist exactly five minutes later on a goal scored by Adree Johnson, the final goal of the half.
The Vulcans took ten shots on goal in the first half while allowing the Lions none.
Though UH-Hilo’s offense slowed down in the second half, Arakawa still scored two more goals to notch a haul — and Multnomah still struggled to get past the Vulcans’ defense. Eking out one shot on goal.
The game counted as an exhibition for Hawai’i Hilo, keeping its record at 0-0-0.
Multnomah (NAIA) moved to an 0-2-0 record.
UH-hilo’s next match will be at noon on Sunday, Sept 3, at home against Colorado-Colorado Springs.
Men’s soccer
Gabriel Gallardo put in two second-half goals to power the UH-Hilo Men’s Soccer team past Multnomah.
After a tied 1-1 score at the end of the first half, Gallardo was successful on his penalty-kick attempt to put the Vulcans ahead in the 51st minute. Fifteen minutes later, the junior added a much-needed insurance goal assisted by Aidan Santos and Bryan Schraier.
Multnomah got a score back with a successful PK in the 80th minute, but UH-Hilo prevailed to take the exhibition victory over the NAIA-Lions.
Junior transfer Shawn Clarke netted the first goal for the Vulcans early in the fifth minute as Jaime Cantalejo de Dios and Camilo Vegara had the two scores for the Lions.
The game counted as an exhibition for UH-Hilo, keeping its record at 0-0-0.
Multnomah (NAIA) moved to a 1-1-0 record.
The Vulcans are back in action Thursday, Aug. 31 for their first official match taking on Western Oregon on O’ahu at the Waipi’o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
First home match is set for Sept. 3 against Colorado-Colorado Springs.
